After beating Milwaukee Bavarian by 3:0 in the US National Cup Semifinal this summer, FC Minneapolis became the first team from Minnesota to reach the Division Finals in over 100 years.
Unfortunately, the team lost the final to Springfield by a 2:0 margin which was played at the Seat Geek Stadium Fields in Chicago, Illinois this past June, but that did not stop the City Lions from continuing their sprint down the road of history-making as their noticeably great performance in the Cup earned them a qualification for the Champions of Region Championship slated to be played over a period of 2 days August 20th and 21st in Michigan, USA.
FC Minneapolis will be representing the State of Minnesota and the whole of Region Two of the United States Adult Soccer Association, and if the City Lions win the National Championship, they would have become the first Minnesota team to qualify for the Championship and to bring it back home, but that is still an if of course.
The City Lions will be joined by 3 other teams; Ann Arbor FC of Michigan, Lansdowne Yonkers of New York, and ASC New Stars of Texas.
FC Minneapolis is scheduled to leave Minnesota on Thursday, August 19th, and will check-in at the Baymont Hotel on the same day where the team is expected to camp for 3 days before returning to Minnesota on Sunday, August 22nd.
The team is scheduled to have a light training session on Friday morning after breakfast at the Michigan Stars Sports Complex between 8:30 to 9:30 am before playing their semifinal game with ASC New Stars of Texas at 4:30 pm.
Confirming to our Media, the City Lions Captain, and Ugandan International Ian Sendi believes the team learned its lessons from the Cup Division Final that they lost to Springfield of Ilinois in Chicago, and that the team will be working together more to avoid repeating those mistakes.
“This is another opportunity to not only represent our team but our State and the entire Region. We all have to step up and realize what an honor that is but also the responsibility that comes with it.” Said the Ugandan.
Coach Oluwalaanu David and his assistant Mohamed Ulel are both confident that the team has made great strides towards addressing its weak spots as well as reinforcing its strong points.
