Former U21 Uganda National Team attacking midfielder Sendi Ian Matovu continued his excellent run after netting his side’s winning goal as they won 2-1 against Austin Villa FC at the Wescott Field in Austin, Minnesota.
The 32-year-old scored in the 69th minute of the evening from 20 yards out when he ran passed the opposing defenders to intercept Ayoup Bader’s through ball before curving it past the stretching goalkeeper in the top right corner of the opposition’s net.
“Sendi is a vital part of the midfield. His ability to create and score in crucial games adds an invaluable substance to our squad, but not just that; his ability to recover and quickly transition into defense is a rare quality.” David Oluwalaanu.
FC Minneapolis went on to win the match by full time, bringing their winning streak to three, and moved into seventh out of eleven with 9 points in 7 games after experiencing their worst start of the United Premier Soccer League in recent years.
The Ugandan, however, missed an opportunity to score a double when Zimbabwe’s Methembe Mzizi found him in the box, but instead fired it into the side netting.
Sendi has now scored one goal and assisted twice in 7 games, but his unique qualities have been visible in the middle field throughout every game not just attacking-wise but also defensively, dropping back routinely to provide an option from the build-up, and to provide numerical advantage and crucial overloads during defensive plays.
